Langhorne Slim

  • Something of a one-man mixture of the Cramps, Beck's early indie records (circa One Foot in the Grave), and the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou, singer and guitarist Langhorne Slim offers a sardonic, modern take on traditional folk, country, and blues. Fancifully dubbed "the bastard son of Hasil Adkins" in some of his early press releases, Langhorne Slim is in fact a Pennsylvania native who resettled in Brooklyn after his graduation from the State University of New York at Purchase. After a self-released demo garnered some local and online attention (as well as a semi-regular gig as the opening act for indie novelty outfit the Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players), Langhorne Slim signed with the indie label Narnack Records and released his first EP, Electric Love Letter, in March 2004. The more varied and band-oriented full-length When the Sun's Gone Down followed in the spring of 2005. Much touring ensued over the next year, including support dates with Lucero and Murder by Death, with drummer Malachi DeLorenzo and upright bassist Paul DeFiglia (aka "the War Eagles") in tow. In 2006, Langhorne Slim signed with the larger (though still not major) label V2 Records, which released the all-new EP Engine in September of that year, as the singer was finishing recording his second full album, produced by Josh Ritter's keyboardist, Sam Kassirer. - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson

  • 23 year-old Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson is Brooklyn’s best-kept secret. Since recording an album with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and Chris Bear in 2006 (with appearances by Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio and Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen), Miles has squandered much of his initial momentum and potential promise in an alcoholic haze and series of shambling yet, ultimately, transcendent live performances at some of Brooklyn’s most and least renowned venues.

With the addition and solidification of his backing band, the Black Boys, Miles’ folk rock has taken a turn toward the anthemic stylings of Fleetwood Mac, Bell Biv Devoe, and early Pavement. The total effect integrates the album’s intimate sounds with that of several bands he led during the past decade that you’ve never heard of. The new line-up is already hard at work on the mildly anticipated follow-up, "Summer of Fear".

Sounds like: the Band, the Boss, Rain Parade, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Regurgitation, Race-Baiting…classic rock ambition with punk rock execution!

J Roddy Walston & the Business

  • A descendent of a long line of great southern musicians, J Roddy Walston was raised on the music of God and taught to play rock and roll by the hand of the Devil. Leaving behind family, friends, and the slow pace of the South, J Roddy headed north, and along the way, picked himself up a mean band of players. A violent and passionate live show, an affinity for melody, and a dash of youthful bravado have had every Yank lucky enough to come across these carpet-baggers come home shaking at the knees and swinging at the hips.
