Lissy Trullie is a musician based in New York City. Having played around with various lineups in the last couple of years, in 2008 she solidified her band. The past few months have seen her compelling songwriting and on point live performances steadily gain attention and fans around the city. Time Out New York remarked that "Her dangerously cool tunes, which mash up dancey new wave, '60's girl-group sounds and the softer side of the Velvet Underground, hit upon the core aloofness that typifies most great New York rock. Simply put, Trullie's magnetism is the kind that can't be learned." Flaunt describes her as "an impeccably self-styled singer and songwriter--a sort of anti-Dylan, immaculately conceived by Grace Slick, birthed in a downtown alley at night, while 'Play With Fire' by the Rolling Stones echoed in the street." As a CMJ 2008 Pick for Spin, they raved that there is "an elegance about Trullie's simple aesthetic, from the unadorned guitar work to her coy but monosyllabic lyrics, and she exuded a captivating vulnerability when her boyish voice grasped at higher pitches."
"'The Sky Behind The Sea' is the astounding solo debut by NYC guitarist Mike Bones, on his own for the first time after shredding for local projects like Soldiers of Fortune. Guitar heroics meet sterling downers of self-authored songs in the punished man template, heralded by a lineage of players from Townes van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Tom Verlaine, up through Chris Brokaw or Cass McCombs. You'll hear a wide range of stately, world-weary doom here, from the quick snap of "Pope John Paul" to the colder, machine-drum glide of "Town Crier." Bones has one foot in traditions of music he obviously loves, and the ability to inject those traditions with his own masterful touches. An astonishing album that resides in my top 10 of 2007." "Formed just over a year ago, this quintet has enjoyed a quick rise up the ranks of the Brooklyn buzz-bin — an almost meteoric ascendance that belies the band’s tender sound. Xylos’ fractured dream-pop gently brings to mind Yeasayer and the Flaming Lips. In fact, on opener “In the Bedroom” founding member Aaron Mendelsohn's voice evokes the wistful croon of Wayne Coyne while he bittersweetly sings about failed romance over tropical synths and twirling guitars. Meanwhile, the swooning harmonies on “This House We Built” virtually demand a coed campfire sing-along under the stars — that is, if the textured rhythms, boy-girl vocals, and ethereal strings throughout this debut EP didn’t sound so magical in stereo."
Xylos' debut full-length, produced by Britt Myers (Yeasayer, Chairlift) will be out this summer. In the meantime, check out the first single, "Not Enough," at xylosmusic.com.
